#29 V.B.B. § 300 Keepers
Quick Reference: Keeper Cost Formula
Drafted Players:Round drafted + (2 × years kept)
Free Agent Pickups:Round 9 + (3 × years kept)
Use the Keeper Calculator below for interactive cost calculations.
- All teams may keep (e.g., retain) one or two players that were rostered upon the completion of the season, constrained by the following:
- A player may not be kept if said player had been drafted in the first two rounds in the draft.
- Said rule applies regardless of which team drafts, trades, and/or drops the aforementioned player.
- For example, a player drafts Matt Forte in round two of the draft and proceeds to drop Matt Forte in week 1 due to injury.
- Due to Ameer Abdullah's second round draft tag, Ameer Abdullah cannot be kept by any player.
- For example, a player drafts Matt Forte in round two of the draft and proceeds to drop Matt Forte in week 1 due to injury.
- Said rule applies regardless of which team drafts, trades, and/or drops the aforementioned player.
- A keeping team will forfeit a draft pick equal to the round the player was drafted in for the first kept season, and 2 rounds higher each subsequent kept season.Example: Drafted Player Keeper Cost
Adam Thielen drafted in Round 10 (2016):
- 2017: Keep at Round 10 (original round)
- 2018: Keep at Round 8 (10 - 2)
- 2019: Keep at Round 6 (10 - 4)
- 2020: Keep at Round 4 (10 - 6)
- 2021: Keep at Round 2 → Not eligible (hits threshold)
- A kept player that was obtained via the waiver wire (e.g., free agency) will lose a 9th round pick the first season, and 3 rounds higher each subsequent season.Example: Free Agent Keeper Cost
Shonn Greene picked up off waivers (2018):
- 2019: Keep at Round 9
- 2020: Keep at Round 6 (9 - 3)
- 2021: Keep at Round 3 (9 - 6)
- 2022: Not eligible (would be Round 0)
Any free agent pickup from 2017 and prior is treated as a 10th round "drafted" player.
- Any team may trade away a player with keeper rights included once per year.
- A team that has acquired the keeper rights may keep that player at same cost as the team that drafted said player.
- For example, a team drafted Wes Welker in the 6th round and proceeds to trade Wes Welker to another team. Wes Welker can be kept by the receiving team in the 6th round.
- A team that has acquired the keeper rights may keep that player at same cost as the team that drafted said player.
- A player is no longer keeper eligible to be kept once his cost (e.g., keeper draft position) reaches the 1st/2nd round draft threshold.
- Continuing from the example contained within 29 V.B.B. § 300(I)(i)(b): 2019: 6th round, 2020: 4th round, 2021: Adam Thielen hits the 1st/2nd threshold, thus cannot be kept.
- A player may not be kept if said player had been drafted in the first two rounds in the draft.
